Lucky Day Trip
0JJ and I have been grounded for the last month since we both have an insane amount of work for our classes. The weekends tend to be spent sleeping late and catching up on required reading (Me)/trying to get prepared for the week ahead (JJ). Even though we both have a ton of work to do, we decided on Friday night that we were going to wake up on Saturday and drive down to Gulfport. We have both been wanting to sample a burger from 5 Guys. We were not disappointed. The burgers were juicy and the amount of fries that came with the order could have fed a few people; We left with about a half a bag full of leftovers.
We left 5 Guys and decided to drop by the Island View Casino and spend 30 minutes or so playing the slots. We haven’t really gambled since our last trip to New Orleans about 4 to 5 months ago. We started playing at a couple of slot machines side by side, and then JJ decided that she wanted to play cards. She was gone about 20 to 30 minutes and later found me at a different slot machine. I had turned my $20 dollars into $140, and I was starting to get the feeling that it was time to go. JJ said that she wanted to drop another $15 and would be right back. I kept playing never really getting up more than $150. She came back and as we were getting ready to leave, I told her that I wanted to play one more pull at the max amount. Well, it hit and finally stopped at just above $500. Needless to say, It was a good day!
We stopped by the outlet mall on the way home and tried not to blow all of our winnings. After paying for gas, lunch, and JJ’s shopping, we came out ahead about $400. It was a great day, and our profits will be placed in our travel fund. We are shooting for a few weeks in Europe next June, but it will depend on the balance of our travel fund. If I could keep hitting jackpots, the trip would be placed on the calender in permanent ink.
Giving Travel Advice
5The last few days I have had the chance to talk to a few people that were contemplating leaving America and doing a some serious traveling. Giving them advice was easy. Should I go to Korea? Yes. Should I go to Europe? Yes. What about Turkey? Yes, Go!
All of the people that I have spoken with were thinking about teaching or working their way across their travels. People usually have numerous questions about how I got to Korea and how hard they think it is to go to another country and work. I try to make people realize how easy it is to get a job abroad and how much they will enjoy it. As they left my apartment, they all were truly excited and ready to do more research about their trips.
I kept trying to put into words what it is like to land in a foreign airport with nothing but an adventure ahead of you……..I had no idea of the financial situation that my advice seekers were in, and Dave Ramsey would probably have scoffed at my carefree attitude. I still believe that if it is at all possible, everyone should travel abroad at least sometime in their life. The younger people that were asking me about traveling have a whole lifetime of worrying about bills, houses, and other problems that come up with life in general. I can honestly say that ever trip I have ever taken has been well worth the money that I have spent, even if I had to work extra to save up for the trip or spend months paying down the debt that I incurred.
I really don’t know when my desire to travel began. It could have been after reading my grandfather’s National Geographic magazines. It may have been after I read On the Road by Jack Kerouac or Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson or any number of the Ernest Hemingway’s books that I have read. Whatever the cause of my wanderlust, I can not picture my future without traveling as much as possible.
I travel because I have a never ceasing desire to see as much of the world as possible and quite possibly because I enjoy having great stories to tell about other parts of the world.
The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. ~St. Augustine
I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move. ~Robert Louis Stevenson
We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment. ~Hilaire Belloc
Lazy Fourth and Road Trip
0We got up and went to Mass on Sunday morning. Well, actually I went to Mass, JJ works in the nursery. We lounged around the house in the afternoon and then went out to pick up some new clothes for our trip this week. Around 9 p.m. we drove over to a parking lot to watch the firework display that Temple Baptist Church was hosting.
Our plan is to leave on Wednesday morning heading to New Concord, Kentucky where we will get to visit with my grandparents and my aunt and uncle. My aunt and uncle are returning home on Thursday and we have plans to stay with my grandparents until Sunday. On Sunday we will head out to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. My good friend has rented a cabin at a resort in Gatlinburg and we plan on staying there until Thursday. On Thursday we will come home via Atlanta. JJ and I are both extremely excited about going through Atlanta as we will stop at an Hmart! I have heard that you can find pretty much every kind of Korean food at Hmart. We have started a huge list of items that we need and we will probably drop at least a couple of hundred dollars on Korean food.
We don’t really know what the agenda will hold for Gatlinburg. I hope to get out and go take some photos and maybe do some hiking as well.
