Suwon Festival Civil Service Exam

6

I have wanted to take photos of the civil service exam reenactment at the Suwon Festival for a long time. I was not disappointed. I hate that this was the first year that I attended the festival. There was a lot going on that day and when I arrived I spent some time photographing the guards that were getting ready for a processional. It was cool to see them while they were just hanging out, smoking, chatting and preparing their costumes.

The test takers were all business and were intent on finishing as soon as possible. There was a proctor that was walking around and checking out their work.

Derek and I shot from the stage until we were asked to leave. We then moved to the sides and shot for awhile.

This guy was watching the group of test takers. This shot didn’t quite come out like I wanted to. Having to change lens throughout the day was no fun either. I see why people go with two bodies.

More to come later. The parade was full of colorful characters and I got some good shots.

Suwon Festival Weekend

1

I luckily was able to wake up for the Suwon festival.  JJ and I stayed up late on Friday night drinking coffee and talking about Paris and our roadtrip.  I have been looking forward to the festival for a month or so now and almost pulled an all nighter, so that I would be up to be able to take pictures of the civil service exam at the fortress at 10:30.  I went to bed around 5 and woke up about 7:30.  I think I ran off of adrenalin all day.  I took the bus to Suwon and as soon as I arrived at the fortress I saw a familiar face.  I realized that a member of the Flickr in Seoul group was waiting on the exam to start as well. I had seen Derek’s work before, but had never met him.    He is a super nice guy and an awesome photographer.  You can check out some of his photography here.  This is the first time that I have really shot photos with some one who was really full of knowledge that they were willing to share.  We ending up shooting together till about 4 when I was plan wore out.  Derek, if you read this, I owe you lunch for all the knowledge today!

The festival was awesome and I will post more about it later. I just started processing the photos and look forward to trying out some new photoshop actions on them.  Here are a couple of shots from the day.

Engagement Photos

We have been putting this off forever.  We needed to get a photo of us for the local papers back home in Mississippi.  We are still trying to figure out which shot to use.  I was also using the 10 second timer.   It took us forever to take all the photos.  We set up on a bench at the top of a hill and it seemed like everyone and their mother wanted to walk in front of the camera.  I think these came out okay, but I could probably process them a little better.engagement2editedwidercrop

Been wanting to try this shot since I first saw it done.

Been wanting to try this shot since I first saw it done.

We have hit the real count down now.  We have 27 days until we leave for Paris.  Everything is almost ready for our trip.  We have about 10 more boxes that we need to get shipped.  We also need to clear our the rest of furniture.  I have already donated a bunch of books to the school and still have some more that I need to get rid of.   We need to take care of some financial matters as well.  We still need to send more money home and get some Euros as well.  The rate has been dropping and we are happy, but we are still only going to send enough money home for the next couple of months.  I also need to go apply for my pension refund.  My goal is to have everything taken care of before my last week.  I really want to be able to relax and just go to school.  That only gives us about 3 weeks to get everything done.

With only 3 weekends left we really don’t have that much time to socialize either.  I have plans on Saturday to head to the Suwon festival at Hwasung.  I also have planned to meet up with some friends for the next few weekends as well.  JJ still needs to see some family before we leave, so that basically leaves us with no more free weekends.  I am chomping at the bits to get home and can’t believe that it is almost time.

Life These Days

3

Since returning from Jeju, life has been pretty non-stop. I have had three dental appointments. Hopefully, we are nearing the ending of my dental experience in Korea for awhile.

I said goodbye to Alex and hired a new teacher for our hagwon. Alex and I were really close, so it makes the school day much longer to not have someone to gossip with. Our new teacher seems to be adjusting really well and the staff seems to like him.

I am also in the process of hiring my replacement. We are looking for a special type of teacher, so the process has not been easy. What can I say…..I guess I’m irreplaceable.HA.

My school has gone into a strict Anti-Swine flu mode. All of the children are having their temperature checked at the door and washing their hands before entering the classrooms. Also, the school is being regularly disinfected. I know that the administration is worried about an out-break and seem to be doing everything possible to keep that from happening.

JJ and I have made numerous decisions regarding our wedding ceremony. Receptions, photographer, colors, hotels, flowers, caterers, guest lists, dresses, and schedules have all been chosen.

I have to publicly say what an awesome job that JJ is doing on all of our packing. My help so far as been to take some boxes downstairs to a waiting taxi. She has done the brunt of the work, but we still have a long way to go. We are shipping everything the slow route and it costs us about 27,000 won ($20….damn you exchange rate) for an 8kg box. We probably have about 10 more boxes to go.

I did have a chance to get out and have a quick bite to eat with Steve Miller/Qiranger. His website his here and his youtube is here.  He has quite the following on both sites.   We have some mutual friends and have been trying to meet up for a couple of weeks now. It was fun to listen to his stories and see someone who is very interested in Korea and Korean culture. We have a couple of meet-ups to plan before I head back to the states. I really want to hit up the fortress at night for some photos..

JJ and I are in the middle of trying to spend a lot of damn money on airplane tickets. In the next couple of weeks we have to book tickets to Jeju for Chuseok, tickets to Mississippi via Honolulu, and JJ’s parents tickets to California. JJ’s older sister is taking care of the in-laws flights from Cali to Mississippi.

I have been adding more photography type blogs to me Google Reader and less Korean ones. I have a feeling that in the next couple of weeks that I will whittle the Korean blogs down to the few that I always read. I will probably trash most of the ones that I never comment on. I have been spending way too much time scanning over random blogs with information/stories that I just don’t have time to read. I have been reading the two blogs below for a couple of weeks and can’t get enough of their photos/stories.

[b]ecker An awesome photographer who has built his own web school/ community. I love looking at his work.I still haven’t had a chance to go back and read some of his older stuff, but will when I have a free few hours.

Jasmine Star I have been checking out her old blog as well. Really inspirational and it has been really awesome to check out the progress of her photography skills. I have seen her name mentioned on a ton of photography sites that I follow and finally added her to my reader.

I just rolled in from a long night out in Seoul and have an upcoming post of what all we did.
