Christmas
0Taking a short break from the travel photos for a few Christmas photos. We had a great Christmas. We spent time with my family, got some great gifts, got to see my nephews open their gifts and had some great food! My mother bought everyone matching pajama pants; this is turning into her tradition. I don’t know how I ate as much as I did. My mother outdid herself this year.
JJ and I are getting ready to go to Kentucky to visit with my grandparents for a few days. We are not actually sure when we are leaving. We are waiting for a package from Korea to arrive and as soon as it gets here we are going to hit the road.
School starts on the 18th of January, but I will probably need to be back for a staff meeting on the 13th. We haven’t really started thinking about next semester, but we have ordered our textbooks and making scheduling plans.
I hope that you and your family had a great Christmas. I know that JJ and I really enjoyed ours.
Casino Run, Christmas Cheer, Plans, and Report Card #1
0Grand Casino
JJ was at library on Monday afternoon studying. I was running around taking care of some errands. The weather was horrible. I had been thinking about sitting around at home and just decided that I wanted to get out of the house. At the last second, we choose to go to Biloxi and stay at the Grand Casino. Because of the crazy weather, it took us over 2 hours to get there. At one point we were driving about 30mph with our hazards on. We finally arrived and happily gave the keys to the valet. The price for the room was nice, but we will definitely be choosing a different casino next time. The gaming area was very small and they had problems opening tables for us to play and there are casinos that are actually closer to us here in Hattiesburg. We did have a great burger from the pub since the buffett was closed.(We were so looking forward to some crab legs) We didn’t win anything but we did have a good time and it was nice to get away for just one night.
Christmas Spirit
Last night we had the pleasure of attending a Chrismas pagent at Oak Grove Methodist Church. My good friend’s children were performing and we went to support them. It definitely put us in the Christmas spirit and the kids did a great job.

Plans
- Today Find an apartment for March. We are going to start looking. We probably won’t sign a lease until we get back from Kentucky in February.
- Christmas Shopping. I have no idea what to get my parents or grand parents.
- Friday night is the St. Thomas Christmas Party. It should be fun.
- Saturday night we are having dinner and watching the Saints game with some friends.
- Sunday we are driving to New Orleans for the New Orleans Bowl and cheering on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. SMTTT It has been along time since I have been on Bourbon Street!
Report Card
Here are my grades for the week! Hopefully, this will become a weekly installment.
A+ Goes to Hotwire.com. I booked a room for the New Orleans Bowl last week. They got me into the Le Pavillion for $60.
A+ Goes to Grand Casino Biloxi for their hotel price mid-week $39.
A+ To the UPS lady who saw me driving away about 100 yards from my house, recognized JJ or myself and flagged us down to give us a package. (Probably JJ, not that many Koreans on our street in Hattiesburg)
A+ To the photographer who took our picture for the St. Thomas directory. You took a nice shot and made my wife’s day when you exclaimed that I came back with gold from Korea.
A+ to Adorama Camera store. You got my tripod and ball head delivered exactly when you said it would arrive!
A+ to the New Orleans Saints! Who Dat?
F to the auditors for my car insurance. You need evidence that I was not in the country for 4 years and were not sure that a complete copy of my passport would work. Also, you need proof that my wife is my wife and didn’t allow a marriage certificate to work???
A+ to my insurance agent at Nation Wide for sorting all the above mess out without driving me crazy. You guys are great.
B to the security guard at the casino. You had never seen a permanent resident card before. You really didn’t know what to think. You were much nicer after your superior told you that it was a valid ID.
F To the pitbosses at the Grand Casino Biloxi. You had 3 tables that were empty and the dealers were just hanging out. You still wouldn’t open up a Let it Ride table for us??? I asked on Monday night and Tuesday morning to have a table opened. We didn’t even have a chance to give you our money!
F to Lady Luck. Give me at least one small jackpot!!
Holiday Spirit, Mississippi Authors, Project 35, and Korean Study
2Holiday Spirit

Since today is a Holy Day of Obligation, my mother didn’t have to work and she choose today to start getting all the Christmas Decorations out. We spent about an hour searching through the attic, finding all kinds of holiday items. Sometime this week we will need to go out and find a tree. We usually tag one earlier in the year, but with the wedding and all the other goings on, we didn’t have the time. It looks like this year we will be picking one up from the Lion’s Club Tree Lot.

My mother and grandmother both collect Jim Shore Pieces. Here are a couple of photos of his work. You can find more information about him and his pieces at his website here.
Mississippi Author

Last night I had the opportunity to meet an old friend at a book signing at Main Street Books in Hattiesburg. Joe Lee and I have been friends since we met in RCIA class where I sponsered him to become Catholic. I look forward to visiting with him again and really look forward to bouncing some ideas I have off of him. Joe is a great guy and has a new book out. I actually helped him with some research(as in I answered a few of his questions:)) and am thanked in the opening pages.(How cool is that!) I haven’t read this book , but have really enjoyed his other titles. You can check out the homepage for Dogwood Press here. You can also check out his Amazon Author page here. You can also buy his books online at Amazon here. His latest book, The Magnolia Triangle sounds like it is going to be great.
Project 35

In the past couple of years, I have put on about 35-40 pounds of pure fat. I pretty much stopped working out when I arrived back in Korea in 2007. I had done so well in 2005 and 2006 but the last two years were pretty lazy as far as exercise goes. I am starting my New Year’s resolution early. I intend to lose 35 pounds of fat this year. I am about a size 37 in the waist and would love to get down to 34. I started today by doing 40 mintues on the treadmill and look forward to joining a gym as soon as we get settled back into Hattiesburg after our trip to Kentucky. Some of the things that I am doing:
- No Fried Food(Not an easy task in Mississippi)
- No Sweets
- Starting to eat Breakfest
- Drinking 8 glasses of water a day
- Exercising 4-5 times a week
- Portion Control
- Eating more fruits and vegetable
- Allowing myself one “rules free meal” per week
Korean Studies
My Korean while pretty good is not where it should be. I got my books in one of our boxes from Korea that arrived yesterday. I am busy trying to devise a study plan. I know that I have already forgotten so much. I have started back with Sogang’s 2A student and workbook. I will go out today and buy some note-cards to start my note card system once again. I really want to be able to converse more with the in-laws and they are beginning to want to speak more and more to me when JJ calls home.
I also have been following Amanda’s blog (Amanda Takes Off) for awhile now and her studying and Korean level drives me to study more. I also regulary plug “foreigners speaking Korean” into You Tube’s search engine to find even more inspiration.
JJ and I do have plans to return to Korean after 5-6 years and I really want to be able to rely less on her to help with translating. There are no Korean classes offered in my area, but I figure that I will pick up a tutor from the University. I can probably find a University student who wants to earn a little pocket money to meet me a couple times a week. JJ will continue to help me, but I would really like to be forced to study outside of our house.
