Korean Culture Class, Packing, and Junktiques

1

Two weeks ago, I was sitting around the apartment planning our move to the new apartment when I got a phone call from a strange number. The caller claimed he was a contractor for the US Army/Department of Defense. He had seen my blog and wanted to know if I was interested in teaching a Korean Culture and Language class to a group of soldiers at Camp Shelby here in Hattiesburg. I was immediately interested and told him that it would probably be better for JJ to teach the language portion of the class since she was a native speaker. He agreed and we exchanged a few emails and got everything set up. JJ and I prepared a presentation with a handout for the soldiers. We met the contractor( who was a former marine and a great guy) at Starbucks a week later and went over his expectations for the class. We met the him again on Sunday morning at 6am and drove out to the middle of nowhere to teach the class. I was super impressed with our students interest in the topic and the questions that they asked. The contractor and the unit commander(or whoever was in charge) seemed to think that we did a great job. Our class lasted about 2 and half hours and we got paid very well for our time. I spent most of the time talking about my experiences in Korea and telling them all of things that I thought would seem different to them.  We also spent a great deal of time on how to be respectful to Korean citizens. It was  great day and I hope that JJ and I have a chance to do it again.

We are in packing mode right now. I have the Santa Fe loaded down with a ton of our stuff. We will need to make a few trips and I will have to con some of my friends in assisting with our heavier furniture. In the last week we have bought two new desks, 3 book shelves, a chest of drawers(See below), and tons of other doo-dads for the apartment. We sign our lease at 10am tomorrow and will immediately start moving in.

JJ and my mother visited several(by several I mean hundreds) of junk shops looking for a chest of drawers for us. JJ found something she liked but wanted to stain it before we moved in.

I hate that I didn't get a before picture but it was bright yellow wood when we started

Studying Korean and a Deer Cam Intro

0

twitter

The picture really does not have that much to do with studying Korean except this is the new background for my twitter page which has been my new way to study Korean. I found TWIPL which is a Korean application to post photos on Twitter. I commented on a couple of photos in Korean and exchanged a couple messages with Korean Twitter users. I also started posting a few photos on TWIPL myself. For the last few days a few of my posts have been commented on by Korean speakers and I have been trying to post as much as I can in Korean. I have been pretty proud of the amount of their replies that I understand but still am having to use my dictionary, Google translator and JJ way too much for answering messages in Korean. I have started back with my flash card system and already have about 100 new words to learn. I also am back using the Seogang Series of text books. I am following about 10 Koreans on Twitter and hopefully will begin to understand more and more of their messages without assistance.

Deer Cam
I put out a wildlife camera a few days ago. The first few nights the camera was set up away from the house in the middle of the woods. We had no luck so my grandfather and I bought some corn and moved the camera closer to the house. We had seen some deer tracks and hoped for the best. We did get some photos but are having some problems with the flash firing way too early or way too late. We had given thought to opening the machine and attempting to fix it but decided that it would be way too advanced for us to do it. I will post more over our results tomorrow! I will say that all of our corn was gone and today I had to feed them twice.

Happy Thanksgiving

2

We had an early lunch with the Mississippi family and then with the help of my brother Hall we drove to Jackson in two cars to pick up Jaeyoun’s family. We checked them in to their hotel and then brought them back to my parent’s house for their first American Thanksgiving Dinner(Well, truthfully leftovers!) They loved the turkey and dressing! We exchanged some gifts and my brother-in-law surprised me with a case of Soju! JJ’s mother made purses for my mother and grandmother. My mother got JJ’s mom a Mississippi Snowball, a pearl cluster.I took a ton a pics!~ Tomorrow is the rehearsal dinner and another day of errand running!

Suwon Festival Parade Characters

5

We finally made our way to the parade and it lasted a lot longer that I thought it would. The first part was more like a contemporary parade and then it concluded with a more cultural type of parade.

These pretty Korean girls were very popular with the crowd and probably the photographers as well

The rest of the photos are from the more cultural part of the parade. I took a bunch of photos and have already posted a few, but here are a few more.

This photographer was quite interested in getting a good shot of Derek and I. I would love to see what she came out with.

All in all it was a good day. I got to take a lot of photos and learned a lot.
