Korea and Culture
Korean Culture Class, Packing, and Junktiques
1Two weeks ago, I was sitting around the apartment planning our move to the new apartment when I got a phone call from a strange number. The caller claimed he was a contractor for the US Army/Department of Defense. He had seen my blog and wanted to know if I was interested in teaching a Korean Culture and Language class to a group of soldiers at Camp Shelby here in Hattiesburg. I was immediately interested and told him that it would probably be better for JJ to teach the language portion of the class since she was a native speaker. He agreed and we exchanged a few emails and got everything set up. JJ and I prepared a presentation with a handout for the soldiers. We met the contractor( who was a former marine and a great guy) at Starbucks a week later and went over his expectations for the class. We met the him again on Sunday morning at 6am and drove out to the middle of nowhere to teach the class. I was super impressed with our students interest in the topic and the questions that they asked. The contractor and the unit commander(or whoever was in charge) seemed to think that we did a great job. Our class lasted about 2 and half hours and we got paid very well for our time. I spent most of the time talking about my experiences in Korea and telling them all of things that I thought would seem different to them. We also spent a great deal of time on how to be respectful to Korean citizens. It was great day and I hope that JJ and I have a chance to do it again.

Part of what JJ prepared
We are in packing mode right now. I have the Santa Fe loaded down with a ton of our stuff. We will need to make a few trips and I will have to con some of my friends in assisting with our heavier furniture. In the last week we have bought two new desks, 3 book shelves, a chest of drawers(See below), and tons of other doo-dads for the apartment. We sign our lease at 10am tomorrow and will immediately start moving in.

JJ and my mother visited several(by several I mean hundreds) of junk shops looking for a chest of drawers for us. JJ found something she liked but wanted to stain it before we moved in.

I hate that I didn't get a before picture but it was bright yellow wood when we started

Happy Thanksgiving
2We had an early lunch with the Mississippi family and then with the help of my brother Hall we drove to Jackson in two cars to pick up Jaeyoun’s family. We checked them in to their hotel and then brought them back to my parent’s house for their first American Thanksgiving Dinner(Well, truthfully leftovers!) They loved the turkey and dressing! We exchanged some gifts and my brother-in-law surprised me with a case of Soju! JJ’s mother made purses for my mother and grandmother. My mother got JJ’s mom a Mississippi Snowball, a pearl cluster.I took a ton a pics!~ Tomorrow is the rehearsal dinner and another day of errand running!

Suwon Festival Parade Characters
5We finally made our way to the parade and it lasted a lot longer that I thought it would. The first part was more like a contemporary parade and then it concluded with a more cultural type of parade.
These pretty Korean girls were very popular with the crowd and probably the photographers as well

The rest of the photos are from the more cultural part of the parade. I took a bunch of photos and have already posted a few, but here are a few more.

This photographer was quite interested in getting a good shot of Derek and I. I would love to see what she came out with.

All in all it was a good day. I got to take a lot of photos and learned a lot.
