I met Morgan one night randomly in my neighborhood.  Actually, I was drinking some beer with some other teachers and he walked by.  We asked him to join us and ended up having a blast.  He and I are in pretty much the same situation; both of us married to Korean women and teaching English here in Dongtan.  He does have two beautiful children and JJ and I had a great time hanging out with them this afternoon.  We orderd bossam for dinner and hung out for a few hours drinking beer and makoli.

More Photoshop Actions! Free

September 26, 2009

After downloading some samples from Totally Rad Photoshop actions, I decided to try out some of the free actions that I linked to before.  I got all of these actions from a post on Design M.AG. Most of these came from Deviant Art sites.  I have included the creator’s name and the download information.  I used the same format as before and didn’t change anything with the action.  I only added an unsharpen mask filter with the settings of 150-1-10.

I signed up for a demo of the Photoshop action pack from Totally Rad. You can fill out the form for the sample actions here.   I tried about 5 of them and honestly this is really my first time to use actions that are this complex.  I really didn’t do anything else to the photos besides an unsharpen mask filter at 150-1-10.  I ran the same settings on all the actions and didn’t touch the opacity on any of them.  This may not have been the best image to try them out on, but I think some of the results came out pretty nice.  I also must admit that a couple of them would not work on my computer.  I am waiting till I get back to the states before buying a new computer and didn’t have enough RAM to run them. (How pathetic is that?)

After running the image through these free actions, I am pretty sure that I will be purchasing the full set when I get home.  I also really need to study up on image processing in Photoshop.  I also really need to spend the time to work on some of my own custom made actions.

If you are looking for actions, here is a list of some other companies/photographers that offer actions for sale or sometimes free. I will using this list to decide what actions I will use.  I hope this  post will continue to grow.  If you have any actions that you use or suggest, please feel free to add them in the comments sections and I will add them to the list.

Looking for a Job in Korea?

September 26, 2009

I have been hiring teachers at my school for the last year or so.  Recently, I have been involved with hiring my replacement and have been interviewing teachers. I finally narrowed it down and offered a contract to a teacher who I think is going to be a great addition to our school.  We have now started the process of acquiring his visa and he should be in country by the next to last week in October.  I had to sort through so many bad resumes.  It was no fun.

Here are a few tips for people that are going to apply for a job in Korea.

  • If you must send a photo, choose wisely.  Do not send a photo of your self drinking a beer, dressed to casually, doing anything stupid, or hugging your best friend.
  • If you have a blog and regularly post items that are intended for adults, it is probably not a good idea to have a link for your blog as your signature in your emails.
  • You can find out a lot by searching for someone’s email address/user name.  Again, if you post to adult sites, dating sites, Facebook, Twitter, or any other kind of social media site, know that your information is out there to be read.
  • Your cover letter and initial email will be read.  That red line underneath the word indicates that you misspelled something.  Please use spell-check.
  • I am no where near an expert in grammar or writing, but if I read your cover letter and use it in my class as a “find the errors exercise”, you are not getting hired.
  • I actually received a covered letter with an animated gif.  You may think it looks cute, but I mean come on.  Who even uses animated gifs anymore?
  • I did an interview last week with a prospective teacher who was out drinking with his friends.  He had set the time for the interview.  I offered to call him back.  He tried to explain why I should hire him, slurred speech and all.
  • If you have worked in Korea before, be honest about your past work experience.  I know that there are some evil hagwon directors out there.  Explain your situation before we call your old school.  If you were fired or pulled a runner, tell me why.
  • When I ask if you are working with a recruiter or have sent any of your information to a recruiter, be honest.  About 6 months ago, I was interviewing a teacher and asked if she is working with a recruiter.  She replied that she had never talked to any recruiters.  I get an email from a random recruiting agency the same day saying that he had a good teacher that I may be interested in hiring.  Same girl.  We didn’t hire her.
  • Don’t lie about your Korean ability.  This is actually quite ridiculous.  We hire people all the time that have no Korean ability at all.  Why lie? If you say that you have a very good command of the language and have Korean friends that speak no English, you should at least be able to introduce yourself to me in Korean.  If you can’t say ” Hello, My name is ________” in Korean, you can’t get away with saying that you have a good grasp of the language.
  • While having an interview, don’t be afraid to sell yourself.  You don’t have to go overboard, but telling me you can’t find a job back home is not a good sign. I know that the economy is rough, but if this is your only reason for coming to Korea, I am probably not going to hire you.
  • Be young(or at least look young), white and female.  I really have a problem with this and wasn’t even going to include it, but if you fit the category, I bet your resume gets looked at first by hagwon directors. I have a director that is really opened minded and so have never really had a problems with this, but we don’t have any teachers over 40 either.

This will be last time recruiting in Korea for awhile. I will be relieved when our new teacher arrives in Korea and begins his training.

Tickets, Weddings, and Plans

September 19, 2009

JJ and I booked all of our flights and now have e-tickets for our entire trip. We will fly from Seoul to Paris with a 7hour lay-over in Kuala Lumpur. We will spend 6 nights in Paris in a small hotel near Republique station. It doesn’t seem to be that far from all the major sights. . We just found out that one of our friends, who I worked with at Youngdo, is living in Paris. We hope to meet up with her during our week in the city. We are steadily gathering information and tips on how to enjoy our week in the City of Lights. After a week in a Paris, we will depart for New York. We have about a 4 hour lay-over in Dublin. I think this is enough time for us to grab a pint or two. We will get into New York around 6pm and grab a hotel near the airport. Our plan is to get up super early and go explore Manhattan for about 10 hours the next day and then fly into New Orleans. We won’t get to see much of New York in a day, but I sure that we will get to Times Square and spend most of our day in that general area. I am pretty sure that we are going to need some major rest before the wedding, but we really have only two weeks to get everything ready once we get back. Sometime in that two weeks before the wedding, I need to buy a car and get a new driving license. I let it expire while I have been in Korea and did not have the chance to renew it while I was in the States.

We are also in the process of gathering addresses, so that we can send out our wedding invitations. JJ has ordered the invitations which I think look great. The design looks good and I can wait to see how the finished product comes out. weddinginvite

JJ’s parents and family are arriving the day before the wedding. This will not give the much of chance to rest up before the wedding rehearsal, but because of work schedules this is their only option. They will only be staying in Mississippi for two nights. They will be staying about 2 weeks in California with JJ’s older sister. They are all coming down for the wedding, so it should be a great time. It will be interesting to see how her family handles eating Mississippi food for a few days. Catfish and hushpuppies with Turnip greens and cornbread!!! Wow! I get hungry just thinking about it!

A couple of images for you. The first one was taken at Bongeunsa and the last one was taken in Songtan on our way to eat Thai food. The dog seemed very protective of the shoe store. or maybe just didn’t like kids. Bongeunsa141516

We are having a somewhat lazy Saturday. I am still trying to hire a teacher to take my place and have been busy interviewing prospective teachers. I have a little less than 45 days left at the school and there is a lot for me to get sorted out before we leave. We are headed to Bundang tonight to have dinner with Troy and Joanne. Sunday will be spent gathering items for our trip and doing some serious packing. I really want to take a bunch of photographs on our trip and I will need to go buy some more CF cards and maybe a new camera bag.

Hope you have a great weekend!~

Honolulu out Paris in….

September 17, 2009

JJ and I had a change of mind after talking it over. We actually made the decision while out with Adam having some beers at Blue Bar. He started talking about Europe and the next that you know we had changed our minds. We have been checking out hotels via Tripadvisor.com and really have been having trouble finding somewhere cheap, clean, and in a good location. We could have gone the hostel route, but really wanted our own room. The private room option at the hostels was the same prices as a hotel, so I decided to start looking at hotels. I finally found a hotel that had pretty good reviews and was in our price range.(damn rooms are expensive in Paris) I thought I would check it out on google maps and what did I see when I looked next door. It is fate. I just hope that they have some room left. location

We almost booked our tickets tonight, but decided to wait one more day to decide exactly when we are going to leave. It looks like we are going to spend about 6 nights in Paris and then make our way to New York. We are going to have about 24 hours in New York and plan on getting downtown for a day in Manhattan. We won’t do much in New York, but I will try and squeeze as much as possible in the 12 hours that we will have to kill in the city.

I have been planning our trip to Paris and trying to figure out what exactly we want to see. I know that we will go to Versailles and at least spend one whole day there. I also want to spend a good amount of time in the Louvre. The last time I was in Paris; I was only 18 years old and really didn’t appreciate as much of as I should have. JJ has never been to France, so I know that it is going to be wonderful trip!

If anyone has any tips or tricks about traveling in Paris or what they would see in a week, please feel free to leave a comment!~

Bongeunsa-Temple in the City

September 13, 2009

Today JJ had a meeting with some of her old college friends. She met her friends in Shinchon and I finally went to Bongeunsa(봉은사). Bongeunsa is a Buddhist temple near Coex Mall in Seoul. You can read more about here. I have been meaning to visit this temple for awhile now. I took a bunch of photos. I mostly took HDR images and if that is not your style, feel free to skip this post. I love walking around temples here. The smell of the incense floating over the grounds is intense. The chanting and the bell ringing seem to never stop. I am not a Buddhist, but the whole experience of being at the temple during a service is unforgettable.

There are still a few more cultural places that I want to photograph before we head back to Mississippi. I also want to hit up Gwanghwamun one more time before I leave. I have seen some photos of the new fountains and really want to check it out at night.
