Hanna
0I came across this post on Under the Volcano a couple of days ago and felt like it needed to be linked to.
Remember, Korean classrooms are COLD. It can be below freezing outside and the teachers will open the windows for “fresh air.” The kids cope by wearing full outdoor clothing – hats, scarves and bulky coats – in class. Except for Hanna, who wore only long-sleeved t-shirts and plastic shoes, often with no socks.
Go read the rest of the post at the above link. I teared up reading the post and the update. I really like to see teachers taking a serious interest in the lives of their students.
Dokdo on the Big Picture
0I frequently check The Boston Globe’s Big Picture gallery. They have had some great work, but I have forgotten to check it recently. Well, I see that I missed a feature on Dokodo. This is the last sentence in the short introduction.
South Korean citizens have staged numerous protests against Japan over the past few years, some with extreme demonstrations, including a woman and her son who cut off a finger each, and one man who attempted to set himself on fire
The photos are pretty good. I have seen a few of them before, but it was great to see them in the large format.
The comment section is worth a read as well. It seems like this hasn’t really gotten the attention of the Korean Netizens as there are only 192 comments. This is not the turnout that I would have expected.
**Edit** I see that this was also mentioned on Cosmic Buddha and Dave’s a couple of weeks ago.
Plans Change

I was all ready to head to Seoul today and even jumped on the subway near my house to head to Dongjak. I changed my mind because of how cold it was and really didn’t want to get back to Dongtan late. I ended up heading into Suwon and walked around the fortress again. I think that this was my third trip in about 5 weeks. I got a couple of good photos, but most were not worth anything.
I hope to make it up to Seoul when the weather is a little bit better. I have been in a funk the last couple of days and hope that this weekend’s rest will be the cure for it. I gotta a bunch of work piling up at home and school and really have to tackle it this week.
Tonight
0After seeing this photo from Silky and seeing her reply to someone looking for locations to shoot the city and river at night, I think I am going to head over to Dongjak Bridge to see if I can get some photos. I hope to walk down to Banpo Bridge as well if I have the time. I haven’t done much night photography and am still trying to figure exactly what settings I will have to use.
